FOXTON.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, July 23.

A movement is on foot to provide a memorial to the late Dr E. M. Wyllie at the Plunket rooms, Foxtcn, by laying out grounds, erecting a sun-dial and scats for the use of mothers and children. Already over £2O has been received towards tile cost.

At the usual fortnightly meeting of the U.A.O.D. A.D. Sister Titcombo presided. Invitations were received to attend, socials at Oroua Lodge (Palmerston North) and at Levin Lodge. Several members signified their intention of attending. At the close of the lodge a meeting of the, R.A.C. was held, being presided over by R.A.D. Bro. Titcombo. A chairmanship competition for which there wore five entrants was on by Bro. Bauke, of Paraparaumu. The officers of H.A.C. No. 10 who acted as judges commented on the very fine display given by the candidates. It was decided that tho next R.A.C. meeting should be held at Shannon, if this were convenient for the Shannon Lodge. Miss E. Titcoinbe. of Palmerston North, is spending a brief holiday with hor parents, Air and Mas E. Titcombo. Miss D. Davies, of Palmerston North, is visiting Iter mother, Airs C. Fitt. Air A. K. .Ylaidcne, of the staff of the local branch of tho Bank of New Zealand, has received notice of his transfer to Ma'rton. Air J. E. Howland, of Tauranga, will succeed Air Maidens. Air E. Field, who has boon attending tho Anglican Diocesan Synod at Wellington where lie was the guest of the Bishop of Wellington (Rt. Rev. H. St. Barbo (Holland) has returned to Foxton. There passed away quietly at the residence of her daughter, Mrs L. Ingram, of Coley Street, on Thursday afternoon, one of Foxton’s oldest and most esteemed (residents in the person of Airs Olive Coley, aged 81 years. For well ovci half a century- -56 years in fact —Alts Coley been a resident of Foxton. Born at Lower Hutt in 1856 she married Air H. Coley at )Vollington in 18(3, and eight years iatcr accompanied her husband to I'oxton where 6he had since resided. Fcr a considerable time the late Airs Coley had been confined to her bed., Ahvays a devoted wife and loving inotner she will bo ,-adly missed by her family and a large circle of friends, particularly those ot long standing who feel the severing of another link with, the early , days of the Dominion and this district ill particular. She leaves besides her husband, a family of “ix daughters and four sons—Alcsdanics U Johnston, W. Walker, L. Ingram (l'oxton) M. Wright (Levin) and I. Lawton and ’E. Taylor (Wellington), and Aicssrs W.', J., R., and U. Coley. Three children predeceased her. There are also left 46 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Airs J. Alaidmcnt, of l’eto.ie, is a sister. At the monthly meeting, of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce, presided over by Mr A. Alsop (president), in connection with the town clock proposal Air Perreau expressed tho opinion that the matter was too costlv for tho chamber to handle. He said he would like to see a public meetinghold before any decision was arrived at It was decided to bold the matter over -in the meantime. A letter was received from the Associated Chambers of Commerce asking tho chamber to reconsider the question of affiliation arid it was deckled that the chamber did not have sufficient funds to enable it to affiliate. Air H. Osborne suggested that a penny-in-t-bc-slot telephone cab-box should be erected in Union Street in the vicinitv of Furter Street and it was decided to confer with the postmaster on the matter. Reference was made to the recent endeavour on the part of the roxton Harbour Board to revive shipping to the'' port, and particularly to tho efforts of Air H. Osborne in arranging protest nicotines in connection with the embargo on wheat. The president said that tho rcsu.t of -Air Osborne’s efforts was io be seen today < as boats wore making regular visits to the port again. It was decided to write to the Harbour Board expressing appreciation of its efforts.
