UGLY SITUATION
INCIDENT IN SHANGHAI. KIDNAPPING OF SEAMAN. : CHINESE QUARTER SEARCHED. (United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph —Copyright.) Received July 26, 11.10 a.m. SHANGHAI, July 25. An ugly situation arose following a quarrel between a group of Chinese and three Japanese seamen, resulting in the Chinese kidnapping in a car a Japanese named Miyazaki. Japanese armed men immediately isolated and searched the Chinese quarter of Cliapei, causing the alarmed Chinese population to pour into the International Settlement for safety. The Japanese, after many hours’ search, modified their methods, but the Chinese bavo not yet calmed down.
TROOPS STILL AT PEIPING. J AP ANESE~AR RIVING. Received July 26, 10.35 a.m. TOIvIO, July 25. Reports from Peiptng indicate that the Chinese are still delaying their promised withdrawal of troops. Only one regiment has departed from the city, while two have arrived. A message from Tientsin states that three Japanese transports have arrived at Taku and are disembarking troops for Tangku. TURN FOR THE WORSE. TOIvIO, July 24. Although the situation in North China was previously officially reported to be entirely clear, it is now reported to have taken a turn for the worse because of the refusal of the Chinese 37th Division to continue the evacuation of the disputed area. A message from Tientsin states that the Chinese fired on a passenger train, further heightening the tension. It is reported from Pekin that the Japanese are reinforcing the front lilies as defiant groups of the Chinese 37th Division refuse to withdraw until the Japanese return to Fengtai.
