VIOLENT EXPLOSION
ARMY POWDER STORE. OCCURRENCE IN YUGOSLAVIA. DEATH AND DESTRUCTION. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received July 26, 9.35 a.m. BELGRADE, July 25. At least five were killed and 30 injured in an explosion which occurred on Saturday at an army powder store at Stragara. The population of a village 20 miles away were seized with panic, believing it to be an earthquake. Troops were rushed to Stragara, but as the authorities will not permit communications there are no details. Explosives were stored there ior use in mining. An official report says: “Some buildings were damaged by an explosion of old ammunition of Austrian origin,” but it is known that a storehouse in which there were 45 tons of gunpowder has disappeared. A factory near the store was blown up and ten houses demolished; all the other buildings were damaged and hundreds of cattle killed. The forest near by was set on fire and is still burning.
