LAWN TENNIS

MANAWATU ASSOCIATION. NEARLY 1000 ACTIVE MEMBERS. Several matters of a routine nature were attended to at a meeting, last evening, of the management committee of the Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association. Those present were Messrs J. T McDonald (chairman), D. I. Robertson, J. C. Christie, L. A. Riechenbach, L. I. Plummer, C. C. Yates and R. O. Hnddon (honorary secretary). Mr H. N. Watson, the president,, wrote thanking the committee for an expression of good wishes for his recovery from ati illness and assured the committee of his continued interest in tennis matters. —The letter was receivocl. A draft of the association’s annual report, which is required early by the New Zealand Tennis Association, was placed before the meeting for approval. The report showed that there were 18 clubs affiliated, with a total of 98G active members, compared with 18 clubs and 959 members the previous year. The individual clubs, with their, respective memberships, were as follow: Bulls 46, Feilding 104 Foxton 52 Levin 55,.Manawatu 88, Northern 107, Pnlinerston North 149, Pohnngina 13, Shannon 51, St. Patrick’s 39, Takaro /0, West End 30, Woodvillc 38, Otaki 38, Longburn 22, AVhaknrongo 33, Y.M.C.A. 20, Technical 31. Owing to the universal half-holiday coming into force, competitions had been held only on Saturdays, the winners in each section being:—Northern: A grade. Palmerston North; B grade, Bulls; C grade, AVest End. Southern: Levin. Owing to the Easter holidays intervening, it had been found impossible to play the inter-section filial between Palmerston North and Levin, and that match lmd therefore been abandoned. Representative matches played in, the season had been: v. Ilutt Valley, lost 15—9; v. AA’nirarnpa. won, 13—11; v. Taranaki lost, 10—6; v. AVanganui, abandoned owing to rain. The association bad challenged Hawke’s Bay for the Christie Cup and had travelled to Napier for the purpose. After a very close and interesting match, the result had been a win for Manawatu by the narrow margin, after each side had won 12 rubbers, of 28 sets to 26 and 265 primes to 260. The nssocicition wns indobted to the Hawke’s Bay Association for its hospitality during the Manawatu team’s stay in Napier. The Manawatu Association’s open tournament had been held in conjunction with the Palmerston North Club’s annual tournament, the winners of the events being:— Men’s singles, A. D. Brown (Auckland) : women’s singles, Miss D. Nicholls (AVellington) ; men’s doubles, AV. Boddy and Dr 11. Chisholm (Manawatuj ; women’s doubles, Misses Dale and AVado (Auckland) ; mixed doubles, P. Charters and Miss D. Nicholls (AA ollington); boys’ singles, C. Shecrin (Manawatu) ; girls’ singles, Miss II use (Upper Hutt). The closed (district) tournament had boon played in January, the results being: Men’s singles, D. I. Robertson; men’s doubles, W. Boddy and Dr R.. Chisholm; handicap, singles. J. Betteridge; women’s singles, Mrs N. Adams; women’s handi cap singles, Mrs Adams; women’s handicap doubles, Mesdames AVeston and Simon. Owing to the infantile paralysis it had been found necessary to abandon the secondary schools tournament. The balance-sheet showed a loss on the year’s working (£32 8s 3d in hand at the beginning of the year and £l9 Is 7d at th'e end) due to several nonrecurring items of expenditure, and a balance of £l9 Is 7d was carried forward. Thanks were due £o the Palmerston North Tennis Club for the use of their courts for tournaments, Mr N. I. Nielsen for the use of his (rooms for meetings; Mr R. H. Spencer, honorary auditor, the ladies who assisted with" refreshments at tournaments, the Press for their valuable reports, those wno supplied transport for representative matches ana ah others who voluntarily gave their services for the benefit of tennis. The report was approved and is to be circulated among clubs in due course. In closing the meeting, the chairman extended his thanks to the members of tne committee for their co-operation throughout the year.
