MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

In the Magistrate's Court today, before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., the Public Trustee (represented by Mr G. H. Lusk) for the estate of the late It. J. Staveley, Otaki. took action for £2B, allegedly due by Leslie Harold Newport, Tokomaru, to the estate under two promissory notes. The promissory notes were produced in Court and argument centred on whether the debt was statute-barred or not. Evidence w r as submitted by G. W. Wilson, district manager of the' Public Trust at Levin, and for the defence by defendant. Air T. Alty appeared for defendant, ' who alleged that the amount owing, except for £5, had been paid back. The receipts, he said, had been lost in a flood which had entered his house wheu he lived at Rangiurm Otald.. Decision was reserved.

CASE AT CHRISTCHURCH. Per Press Association. . CHRISTCHURCH, July 27. Joseph.. Reid Taylor,, a. 20-year-old salesman, was a guest at the City Council traffic inspectors’ dance last night and in the Magistrate’s Court to-day he pleaded guilty to being intoxicated while in charge of a car in Armagh Street last night. Taylor was fined £lO and his license was cancelled for twelve months'. . . Sub-Inspector McLean said that Taylor was found in the front seat of a rental car by two traffic inspectors; they were satisfied that he was intoxicated. Counsel contended that the offence was a technical one. Taylor had been to the traffic inspectors’ dance and had had a number of drinks. He felt unwell, so he went to the ear, unlocked the door, threw the keys on the floor and fell asleep. Taylor had made no attempt to drive the car, lie claimed.
