EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” JULY 28, 1907.
On account of the high prices ruling for cheese on the London market, many dairy companies had been changing over from butter-making to cheese production. The Dairy Union, however, had decided against the move, having been advised from London that the high choose prices were only temporary. There had been 17 acceptors for the Grand National Steeples and 33 for the Grand National Hurdles. Kaifere, 13.3, had been top-weight in the former and Cuiragno, 11.13, top-weight in the latter. It had been reported to Parliament that railway running costs had been £252 per mile per annum against £149 per mile per annum in 1897. A Canterbury farmer the previous year had bred 268 lambs from 203 ewes. The lnmb3 bad been sold at 16s lOd and the wool cheque from the ewes totalled £B6; tiius the ewes had returned 30s per head; which was considered to be outstanding. Webb, the New Zealand sculler, had been in hard training in Australia for his race with Towns for the world’s championship.
