WOODVILLE, July 27.
A special meeting of the Woodville Borough Council was held on Saturday '•veiling when the Mayor (Mr H. P. Horne) presided. His Worship expressed thanks to the council for it 6 sympathy in his illness and for carrying on the work of the borough in his absence. “It is perhaps not generally known that the system of borough finance is governed by Acts of Parliament,” stated Cr H. Galbraith, “and that the Audit Office inspectors aro invested with the duty of seeing that the requirements of the various Acts are carried out. This council was compelled this year to strike a vory much increased general rate in order to comply with the provisions of the Statutes governing the position as pointed out by the audit inspector after his inspection of the accounts for the year ending March 31, 1936.” The Mayor said that through illness he had been absent from the last mooting when the rales were struck, but he concurred with the decision as it appeared to be tho only way -to place the finances on a better footing. At the annual meeting of tho parishioners of Holy Trinity Church the 'vicar (Rev. B. P. Williams) presided. The vestry reported a debit of £l6 6s 3d. but were pleased to state that this was an improvement on tlie previous year. The financial position was a good deal more satisfactory than the previous year. The election of officers resulted: —Vicar’s warden, Mr A. H. Hustwick; people’s warden. Mr F. H. Giles; vestrymen, Messrs J. Spackman. A. ,C. Vowoll, W. C. Arrow, J. P. Mahon, FI. R.- Johrfcton, G. A. Davidson, T. Smith, T. Schaw, G. King, and M. Poulton; auditor, Mr W. A. Lyon. Tiro July meeting of tho Kumeroa-Hope-lands Women’s Institute was presided over, by Mrs J. O’Neil (vice-president). Pinnoforto solos were given by the Misses Busst, of Papatawa. An interesting travel talk, given by Mrs N. J. Gilbert, related her experiences in Europe. A competition for a sponge cake, donated hv Mrs G. Sinclair, was won by Mrs Rush. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Bryant, Maboy and Cranfield. At a meeting of the Southern Hawke’s Bay Power Board yesterday the chairman (Mr M. 0. Grainger) congratulated Mr H. P. Horne, of Woodville, on his good recovery from his recent illness.
