TERRACE END PIT
BEAUTIFICATION SCHEME, PROPOSALS COMMENDED. Commendation of the developments for the utilisation of the railway gravel pit at Terrace End for beautification purposes was expressed at the monthly meeting of the executive of the Terrace End Progressive Association, last evening. After consideration of the report presented to the Palmerston North City Council by the city engineer (Mr J. R. Hughes) and the city curator (Mr P. Black), together with a plan of the proposed lay-out of the area, it was decided to congratulate the council on the progress made with the Railway Department for the acquisition of the area, and to congratulate the officers responsible on the recommendations advanced. , , . , ~ When introducing the subject, the chairman (Mr T. W. Henderson) said there was one phase to be borne in mind—the whole idea was tentative. A Start had been made, however, with the actual work involved, and a copy of the report of the city engineer and the city curator, with a plan of the prefosals, had been received from the City Council. The chairman read the jpint report (already published). On the face of it the plan was agreeable to look at, said the chairman. The advice was most welcome and the association greatly appreciated the courtesy of the council in forwarding not only a copy of the report, but also the plan as well. It was understood that there was a strong possibility that there would be a greater area taken _ over than had been involved in the original negotiations. The whole scheme would take some time to complete, if carried through in its entirety. Mr J. Davidson thought the plan should be approved of as a whole. The matter could well be left in the City Council’s hands, i Mr S. H. Snell considered the council should be congratulated on the clear and concise manner of setting forth the proposals. They would be an improvement, not only to Terrace End, but to the whole city, and the development of the pit would greatly improve that approach to the city. On Mr Snell’s motion, seconded by Mr J. H. Nash, it was decided to congratulate the council on their endeavours so far, and on their acceptance of the department’s offer, while also congratulating the officers of the council responsible for the report and the plan.
