SKI RACING.
DOMINION DOES WELL. SECOND TO~AMERICA. Per Press Association. THE HERMITAGE, July 27. New Zealanders performed remarkably well in the downhill ski race against the American team at the ski championships to-day, filling second and fourth places. H. Wigley, New Zealand, who finished second to R. Durrance, America, easily broke the previous record of 3min. 25sec. for the course, which the New Zealander established at the 1935 championship. The first five competitors finished inside the previous course record, which is now held by Durrance with 2.36 2-5. Results: Downhill event, a drop of 2500 f- in two miles: R, Durrance (America;. 2.36 2-5, 1; H. Wigley (New Zealand), 2.55 4-5, 2; J. Laughlin (America), 3.19 1-5, 3; B. Macmillan (New Zealand). 3.22, 4; D. Bradley (America), 3.24 3-5, 5; S. Bradley (America), 4.2 4-5, 6; B. Murphy (New Zealand), 5.24 7; A. S, Wigley (New Zealand), 8.0. 8. The teams’ times, calculated on the best three performers, were: America 9.20 1-5, New Zealand, 11.41 4-5. A. S. Wigley made slow time owing to a chest injury received earlier in the week and will not compete further at the present meeting. H. Wigley gave a magnificent performance, taking every schuss straight and having no falls in his descent. He finished only 19 2-ssec. behind Durrance, who made a faultless journey. The next three competitors finished close together. Easily the most difficult slalom course which New Zealanders have encountered was laid out by Durrance for the slalom event of yesterday and to-day. The course is barely 30 feet wide at the narrowest point and runs down a snowy chute between two bluffs above Ball Hut, the last set of flags being level with the roadway. The Xipper portion of the course, down which Durrance swept like a swallow in flight, was studded with rocks and small bushes.
