WORLD ECONOMICS

BELGIAN’S MISSION

BRITISH ATTITUDE. DESIRE TO CO-OPERATE. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (British Official Wireless.) Received July 29, 11.55 a.m. RUGBY, July 28. In the House of Commons, in answer to an inquiry on the recent letter from the King of the Belgians to his Prime Minister (M. Paul Van Zeeland) on concerted economic study, Mr It. A. Eden said that the Belgian Prime Minister undertook a mission of inquiry into the existing world economic conditions, to which reference was made in the letter from the King of the Belgians, at the joint invitation of the r'rench and British Governments. The British Government had therefore naturally read with great interest the suggestions made in the letter, a copy of which had been communicated to it by the Belgian Ambassador. It was understood, said Mr Eden, that M. Van Zeeland was about to set out the preliminary results of his inquiry and, in view of this fact, also the ract that the British Government had not so far been requested to furnish comments on the detailed suggestions made in the King of the Belgians’ letter, it was not advisable for him to comment thereon at present. He added that the British Government warmly appreciated the ideals inspired by King Leopold’s initiative and would approach the results of M. Van Zeeland’s preliminary inquiry with a desire to co-operate in any proposals which offered prospects of practical action.
