EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” JULY 30. 1907. The Horowhenua County Council and the Levin Borough Council had decided to share in the expense of installing the telephone in their office. A deputation of tradesmen had waited on tlie Government with a request that the duty’ on motor-cars he retained. The Minister said it had been decided to admit the chassis of ears duty free, while a duty of 121 or 20 per cent, would be placed on car bodies. The New Zealand Automobile Association had been formed. The Agricultural Conference had passed a resolution congratulating the Government on removing the sheep tax. There had been & big demand for land in the Kairanga district. Several offers of £SO an acre had been refused by owners. The Government had refused to declare Otalu a borough. The total number of shops in the colony had been 10,727, employing 29,141 hands; tnq Total annual wages being £1,482,373.
