The Springboks undertook training on a fairly firm turf at R-ugby Park, a number of players giving an impressive display of place-kicking. Nel said that on the tour so far they were impressed with the quality of the New Zealand forwards, but the backs, as a whole, were not as good as they bad expected. A weakness in the backs tackling had been noticeable. ■ REFEREES APPOINTED. WELLINGTON, July 30. Tiio executive of the New Zealand Rugby Union, at a meeting this week, confirmed the appointment of Dr. McK. Dickson, Christchurch, as referee of the match between the Springboks and Manawatu at Palmerston North on August 4, and of Mr L. E. Macassey, Otago, as referee of the Springboks-Wellington match, at Wellington, on August 7. . The secretary of the New Zealand University Rugby Football Council, Mr C. M. Turner, advised that the council was now constituted as follows: Messrs D. O. Williams (Massey Agricultural College), J. McKenzie (Otago University), C. Blazcy (Canterbury College), J. LL Mackay (Victoria College) F. Macke li (Victoria College), and M. J. White (Canterbury Agricultural College). WIN EOR RANGITIKEI. TAIHAPE’S GOOD SHOWING. TAIHAPE, July 28. Rangitikei defeated Tailiape to-day by 14 points to 11 after a keenlycontested game. The local team led by eight points to six at half-time, but Rangitikei scored twice in quick succession immediately after the interval to lead by 14 to 8. Taihape pressed in the closing stages and Hagan scored an unconverted try, to bring the maroons’ total up to 11. The home team was attacking strongly when time was called. Culpan, the Rangitikei winger, scored three' tries for the visitors, and Hallamore also registered a try for Rangitikei. H. Marshall converted Culpan’s second try. Barrell, J. Henery and Hagan scored tries Taihape, Henery’s try being converted by Hagan. INTER-COLLEGE MATCH. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 29.In a Rugbv match played on the Wellington ‘College ground to-day, St. Patrick’s College (Silverstream) outplayed Wellington College in every department ,to win by 14 to 9 (one goal and three tries to two tries and a penalty goal). The winners had a substantial advantage in weight, both backs and forwards. Superior Combination and snappy passing by the hacks had the defence continually tested, and in the second spell Wellington wore rarely in their opponents’ territorv.
