Grampian as Hurdler. Grampian, who has shown fair form over the fiat, having won this- season on the Nelson-Marlborough circuit, at Otaki and at Waimatc, is the latest recruit to hurdling at Riccarton. On Wednesday ho was sent over two pony hurdles four times, improving with each effort. He is the right stamp for a juniper and is likely soon to make good.
A Smart Filly. Short Circuit was expected to make a return at the recent Wollington meeting, but after failing to act in the heilvy going in her first uppearance on the second day, she was not produced again. She has not been galloped since to any extent, but was seen to advantage this week in beating her stablemate, Baldoon. a halfbrother to Grey Honour, decisively over six furlongs. Short Circuit is to reappear in the maiden .. event at the Christchurch Hunt meeting to-morrow. Terry at Riccarton.
The Levin owner-trainer, W. llume, Jia9 put in an appearance at Riccarton with Terry and Mittie. Terry won a race a few weeks back at Napier and, although on the small side to tackle big fields such as she will encounter at Riccarton, she is expected to race prominently. Mittie won the Apprentices’ Plate, seven _ furlongs, at the Wellington summer meeting in January last, beating Day Dress and Old Surrey, but on ‘her return home she contracted a poisoned leg and has not raced since. She is a most attractive looking filly, and is sure to engage attention before her return home. Glen Abb’s Prospects.
The Australian-brod gelding Glen Abb is wintering- exceptionally well at Ellerslic and, judged by the manner in which he is working, he will be ready to race early In the new season. He has thickened a good deal sinoo he last appeared in public and looks an improved horso in every respect. Although a winner during tho current season, there is every prospect that Glen Abb will achieve higher honours as a- four-year-old during the new racing poriod. Promising Filly. Reports from Hastings state that the rising two-year-old by Nigger Minstrel from Table Talk is displaying promise in her latest track efforts.’ This filly is broil for speed, her dam being a daughter of Finland from War Scare, by Martian from Gossip, who produced, among other good performers, Estland and Bobrikoff. Cuddle Coming Back.
Cuddle is returning to her old quarters at Trentham this week, and she will shortly commence a preparation for tho New Zealand and Auckland Cups.
Great Star Reappears. Great Star lias put in another appearance on tho Riccarton tracks. He looks in robust order, and as there is do suggestion of unsoundness it is probable he may be given a further opportunity in the spring to add to his remarkably long record. Hunting Song’s Record.
Hunting Song, whose progeny have won close on £16,000 this season, becomes tho leading sire of the Dominion for the fifth time In succession, thus equalling the rec’ord .of Soult. Martian, a great stayer and sire, holds the record with six times in succession, but there is every prospect that Hunting Song will set a new standard. _ Youngsters at Ellerslie.
At the present time half a dozen rising two-year-olds are in regular work at Ellerslie, but owing to the heavy state- of the ground they have not been seriously tested. Several of them have been in commission since the autumn and are ginning to attaih racing shape. The list, with their respective trainers, is as follows : —R. S. Bagby: Royal Abb, b colt, by Posterity—Gcnesta, by Thespian—Damans, by Bimond —Pennon; b colt by Lord Quex —Catalini, by Catmint—Symbolism, by Symington—Amphora. H. Jury: Bronze Ora, br colt, by Bronze Eagle—Eldora. by Pantheon—Dora’s’ Double, by Bacho’ors Double. J. M. Buchanan: Br hi y by Appellant—Royal March by Lucullus— March, by Marble Arch—Lady Musket. F. Gilchrist': Ch filly by Captain BunsbyGold Money, by Paper Money—Miss Ethel, by Wairiki—Miss Rose. E. Manson : Bay filly by Appellant—DepredationKilwinning mare. A Surveyor Gelding. Flash by, the Surveyor gelding, who is galloping well at Takanmi, is a goodactioned two-year-old. Owing to an accident he had an enlargement in front ot one of his hocks which, however, has not affocted his galloping ability. Mazir Reappears. After a lengthy respite from work* dating which time he has been regulany fed, Mazir has made his reappearance on the training track. He is looking a picture of health, and his freedom of action while working is in direct contrast to that during the middle of the season, when he sometimes moved very short. He will not be raced early in the new season, so will not need to be hurried in his preparation. Ready to Resume.
Master Brierly, who has been spelling for nearly three months, is now being ridden about preparatory to resuming work on the tracks. He has wintered well and is in splendid condition to undergo a preparation.
Erndale’s Next Race. Erndale, winner of two races at the Great Northern meeting, is to race next month at the Pakurang-a Hunt fixture, when his improved form is expected to continue His half-brother, by Philamor, has been named Phildale, who is very like Paddon ir, appearance. His dam, Lunette, is a half-sister to Paddon.
Death of- Owner. Mr C. E. Twist, whose death occurred at Taradale yesterday, was a past president of the Napier Park Racing Club. In recent years he raced Prosy Boy, Dozier, Lucullus Lad and Cullus. He was a member of the Hawko’s Bay Jockey Club, Waipukurau Jockey Club and Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club, of which bis wife and daughter (Miss Graco Twist) arc well-known supporters and followers.
