MAGISTRATE’S COMMENT.
AUCKLAND CASE. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, July 30. “The matter is one of such wide notoriety at the present time that men who take drink and drive cars know the great risk they are taking,” said Air F. H. Levien, S.M., in the Police Court this morning when dealing with AA’illiam Selwyn Hewson, who pleaded guilty to intoxication while in charge of a motor van. Tiie evidence showed that defendant knocked down a man, who was also under the influence of drink. Hewson was fined £5, and his license was cancelled for twelve months.
Mr Levien added that about 75 per cent, of the cases of this kind coming before himself and the other Alagistrates involved the drivers of commercial vehicles, and that it would be establishing a precedent if he did not cancel accused’s license.
