DOMINION SUCCESS
BATTING AND BOWLING. MATCH WITH SURREY. GALLICHAN FIELDS WELL. (From the Special Correspondent of the United Press Association with the team.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received July 30, 9.55 a.m. LONDON, July 29. On the second day of their match with Surrey the New Zealand cricketers, continued their innings to score 495. Surrey replied with 277, and New Zealand batted again, at stumps 42 having been scored without loss. New Zealand continued their innings in fine weather on a good, wicket till the tenth wicket partnership had added 52, when Page was caught at cover. He had hit seven fours. After making their highest total of the tour, New Zealand achieved an unexpected but meritorious success on the field, dismissing the reputedly strong batting side for a moderate total on a perfect wickot, even though the attack was impoverished by the absence of Cowie and Dunning. The former retired with stomach trouble after taking two cheap wickets and the latter had leg soreness. Hadlee and Weir were the only bowlers above slow pace. Only Sandham among the early batsmen was comfortable. He stayed for nearly three hours. Moloney enjoyed a hectic period of deadly effectiveness, taking three wickets for no runs in two overs. Surrey then had eight down for 147. Watts and Gover, two bowlers, bitting vigorously, added 124 . with great pace. Watts gave a fine display lasting a little over an hour.. Ho hit nine fours and Gover six fours. Galliehan had field day in the slips, taking three good catches. Moloney’s success again illustrated how invaluable a leg spin bowler is in England. In view of the depleted attack the tourists were unwilling to attempt the task of dismissing the county a second time so a follow-on was not enforced. New Zealand batted for three-quarters of an hour. There was surprising interest in the match for an off day, the attendance bring about 7000. Details: — NEW ZEALAND. First Innings.
