EARL MARRIES ACTRESS.
Received July 31, 9.40 a.m. LONDON, July 30. The Earl of Jersey to-day married Miss Virginia Cherrill, the film actress, at the Chelsea register office. Miss Cherrill’s best part was as the blind girl in Charlie Chaplin’s “City Lights.” She is 29 years of age and the divorced wife of Cary Grant. As is often the case with Chaplin’s “discoveries,” she fitted admirably the role in his picture, but has made little headway since. Only four film performances by her are recorded subsequent to “Oity Lights,” and she has been practically unheard of in tlie film world in the past two years. The Earl, in 1932, married Miss Patricia Richards, of Sydney. She divorced him. Described as the most fashionable wedding of the year. Lord Jersey married Patricia Richards, the 19-year-old daughter of Mr Kenneth Richards, of Coot.amundra, and Mrs Richards, of London, in January, 1932. The honeymoon was spent on a visit to Australia. There is one daughter of the marriage, Lady Caroline Child Villiers.
Lord Jersey is the ninth En.rl of Jersey, an earldom created in 1697. His other titles are Viscount Grandison, Viscount Villiers, and Baron Hoo. He caused a sensation when four years after his marriage lie published' an advertisement disclaiming ‘responsibility for any debts incurred hv his wife. The divorce followed shortly after, Lady Jersey petitioning.
