EXTRACTS FROM ‘‘STANDARD.” JULY 31, 1907. The amount of land lax paid on native land for the year ended March 31, 1907, had been £6423 6s 4d. The Manawalu Athletic Park Companyhad decided to voluntarily wind up under, the provisions of the Companies Act. There had been 75,310 people working in factories in the Colony compared with 18,000 ten years previously. Potatoes were polling at from 30s to £2 a ton on the Australian market. Inland farmers had ceased to rail supplies until the Government reduced freights, as the cost of transport, and commission had exceeded in many cases (he gross return from the sale. Bootmakers and retailors in Auckland had protested to the Government against the increases of from 30 to 100 per cent, in the duty on footwear. It, had been stated that all local factories were working at pressure and required no further protection. Over 90 patients had been treated at ■the Palmerston North Hospital during the month, which had been a record for the institution. Fifty-three patients had been admitted.
