MANAAYATU’S NARROW DEFEAT. FIRST REPRESENTATIVE MATCH. With ladies’ hockey revived in the Manawatu this season, it could hardly be expected that the first representative match would result in victory, hut on Saturday the Manawatu team showed remarkably good form and were unlucky not to draw with a much more . experienced side from Akitio. The score was 3 —2 and the game was fast and interesting from whistle to whistle. In the first spell, the visitormaintained a definite territorial advantage and scored two goals. The second spell, however, found the local team much more aggressive and they scored two splendid goals while the Akitio team secured victory by what was really a “gift” goal. The teams were: —• Akitio.—Mieses O. Yeoman (captain), W. Smith, G. Yeoman, D Kent, Mrs Sterrard, Misses P. Berry, G. Hannan, E. Yeoman, C. Bowie, I. McLaren, and R- Meecli. Manawatu. —Misses E. Hill, M. Bottcher, Mrs Kearns. Mrs Thomas, Mrs Pink. Misses P. Hancox, E. Gloyn, F. Highfield (captain). Mrs Rolleson, Mrs Tucker, and Miss N. Davis. . Following mid-field play Akitio settled down to be really dangerous. They were in the Manawatu circle and Miss G. Yeoman found the net with a fast shot but she was ofr-SKie and the. resultant free hit brought relief to Manawatu. The local team took a turn on the attack but thevisr tors were back again, Miss Highnela and Mrs Rolleson stopping several dangerous rushes. Akitio came with--in shooting range again and Miss Kent missed the goal by inches. Manawatu were penalised, and Miss Kent plaved the hall into position for Miss Smith to mnke no mistake with the shot Akitio continued to be aggressive'and Miss Kent narrowly missed two further chances. Manawatu eased the pressure and for a time looked like scoring, but the goalie cleared cleverly and the visitors rushed play into Manawatp ' territory where, a keen tussle ensued. At length Miss . . Yeoman found the net to put Akitio two up at half-time. In the second spell excitement Kan high, enthusiasm from the sideline inspiring the Manawatu players with the vim they lacked in the first spell. Mrs Rolleson was playing a good game in particular and the local ladies-were close- to scoring Miss Bottcher essayed a shot which was just turned aside bv the goalie and a little later her second attempt was stopped. Manawatu continued to be dangerous and Mrs Kearns missed the net by a narrow margin. Akitio relieved the pressure and in a dangerous rush found the defence lacking. Miss 0. Yeoman hit for the gaol, but it was a slow ball and seemed certain to he stopped. The goalie, however, took it too cheaply and it trickled in. . Manawatu attacked with added vim. Miss Bottcher taking the hall right through for Miss Hill to drive it home from a difficult angle following a long corner. Mrs Kearns missed narrowly hut they came again, Mrs Thomas tuning a stroke nicely for Mrs Kearns to°shoot straight and true. Manawatu retained the territorial advantage and fought hard to equalise. Mi«s Hill missed a goal by inches and the Akitio defence was sorely tried. The game ended soon after with the score: Akitio 3, Manawatu 2.
Miss E. Yeoman and Mr IV. H. IVilson were the umpires. TOWN v. COUNTRY. ' Teams representative of Town and Country, met as a curtain-raiser to the representative match and a keenly contested game resulted in a win for Country by two goals to one.
