NEWS FROM RAROTONGA. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 30. The correspondent of the United Press Association, writing from Parotonga, states The leper concentration hospital at Te Sauma, Penhryn Island, has now been completed and seven lepers have been segregated there until they can be transferred to Makogai. Ivauvai Teeio Mataiapo has been elected to represent the district of Takitumu on the Island Council of Rarotonga in place of Tau Cowan, who resigned. Meetings of fruit growers recently were held in every district of Rarotonga. At these meetings the Itesident Commissioner urged the people to save their fruit trade and do everything possible to restore it to its former condition. A systematic pruning scheme was explained and met with the enthusiastic support of all I growers.

The following have been elected members of the Fruit Advisory Committee : Messrs Arumnki Strickland (representing the Avarua Maori growers), Ipiri Peckham Maoate (Takitumu growers), Robert McKegg, European growers (elected unopposed). The fruit shipment which left Rarotonga by the Matua on July 23 comprised approximately 13,200 cases of oranges from Rarotonga, Aitutaki and Atiu, 7192 boxes of tomatoes from Rarotonga and 2124 cases of bananas from Rarotonga. The prices paid for tomatoes were 3s 6d for the fruit alone at the wharf (shed price 3s) and 6s per box f.o.b. Prices for bananas were 3s for the fruit alone on the wharf (shed price 2s 6d) and ij.s Gd per case f.o.b.
