HARRIERS.
Y.M.C.A. v. MARTON. Thirteen members of the Marton Harrier Club journeyed to Palmerston North on Saturday to engage in an inter-club race of GJ miles with the local Y.M.C.A. Club. Due to better teamwork Marton won the team,s’ race by 38 points to 41. Nevertheless, the Palmerston North team did very well to extend the visitors, who ar.e the West Coast champions. Six men in each team counted in the points. After a fast start C. Weller took the lead, closely followed by five Martin runners. At the end of' the first lap Weller had a 100 yards break on W. Edge, L. Smith, and T. Hill, all of Marton, who were running in a bunch. The Palmerston North runners, K. Galloway, N. Hearsey, and J. Scott, with M. Hunt (Marton) were close behind in another bunch. Keeping up a fast pace, Weller finished strongly and came in 160 yards ahead of Edge (Marton). His time, 36min. 27sec.', was a record tor that course. This was excellent considering the boggy nature of the paddocks. K. Galloway, J. Scott, and N. Hearsey also registered good performances. The Morton team filled second, third, fourth, sixth, tenth and thirteenth positions. The following are the placings and the times of the first 16 to finish (there were 27 starters) :-C.
