WANGANUI BEAT MANAWATU. For the firet time for a number of years a Alanawatu Association football team visited Wanganui on Saturday, when the home side won by 3 goals to 1. The teams were as fohow:— Manawatu. — Kempson, ’Oman, Broughton, Lang, Thompson, McShcffrey, Hooker, Allen, \\illianis, Blakey, Lyon. Wanganui.—Healey, Ward, Taylor, A. Fairolough, Whiting, Humphries, A. Kidd, J. Wilson, Archibald, AJackie, E. Fairclough. AJackie was soon prominent with a good run which, however, was nullified by good defensive work by McSheffrey, the Manawatu half-back, who, though near ' the “veteran” stage, played the best defensive game of his side. Smart work by the Palmerston North half back lino for the first ten minutes kept the play in the Wanganui half, but the Alanawatu forwards failed to combine well and were never dangerous, Wanganui maintained tile pressure and *a few minutes later Mackie scored with a grand shot.
Housed to action, the Alanawatu men replied with a stirring attack that culminated in Williams, the centre-forward, topping the liar with a smart shot. Humphries initiated an attack and after some pretty combination by Archibald, Mackic, and Fairclough, the last-named scored an easy goal. It was now Alanawatu’s turn and good work by Lyon, Blakey, Williams and Allen resulted in Allen shooting over. A. Fairclough was next prominent and. getting Kidd away, the left winger scored a . meritorious goal with a high shot. After the interval, Manawlatu wore soon attacking. Then the centre-half, Thompson, who played a sporting game all. through, set off the Alanawatu quintette, 1 who came* near to scoring, Blakey testing Healey with a snapny shot which the latter dealt with promptly. For a few minutes Alanawatu seemed to have the ascendancy' Their forwards appeared dangerous, but Biakov missed an open goal. Alien was the next to try his marksmanship, but the New Zealand representative could do no better than his colleagues. Not long before the call of time the Alanawatu forwards, who were always trying hard, broke away and Lyon, the speedy winger, scored with a low cross shot which boat Healey all the way. It was a very interesting game to watch, but the Manawatu forward lacked cohesion, though Allen and Williams showed some spectacular dribbling.
