YACHT OVERTURNS.

PHOTOGRAPHER DROWNED. SEARCH UNSUCCESSFUL. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Ajig. 1. An Air Force photographer, Leonard Orr Smellie, aged, 23, was drowned about a quarter of a mile from the air base at Hobsonville on Saturday afternoon when a sudden gust of wind overturned a small yacht in which he and another photographer were sailing. Although parties of men dragged the harbour until nightfall on Saturday and again to-day, the body was not recovered.

The photographers, Mr Smellie and Mr H. C. Hanning, were sailing a small Tanranga class yacht between Beach Haven and the Hobsonville wharf. The water was comparatively calm at the time, when suddenly the yacht was seen to heel over and watchers on the shore saw one man clinging to the overturned boat while the other struck out for the shore. Aircraftsman Anderson launched a dinghy from the shore to rescue them, but the swimmer, Mr Smellie, disappeared from view.

When Mr Hanning was safely ashore a hurried rearch was made for the missing man, but. without avail. Mr Smellie was a young Christchurch man who came up to the Hobsonville air base three-years ago. _
