BATTLESHIP BUILDING
INCREASES IN SIZE. DANGERS POINTED OUT. ADMIRAL’S SPEECH. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (British Official Wireless.) Received August 2, 9.15 a.m. RUGBY, July 31.
The size of battleships was discussed by Admiral Sir Herbert Richmond at the Liberal Summer School at Cambridge. He referred to the tendency on the part of the nations arming beyond their financial limits to try to make up their want of numbers by an increase in the'size of the ships. Throughout history this had invariably resulted in another Power building ‘similar or bigger battleships in reply. He expressed surprise that nations with military ability, knowledge and experience should repeat a mistake of this kind, but thought the indications were that it would be done and prophesied that other nations, including Britain, would be constrained to follow their examples in order to preserve their position.
