COUNCIL OARAGE.

PROVISION OF DOORS. At a recent meeting of the Palmerston North City Council the Mayor (Mr A. E. Hansford) drew attention to the housing of the council lorries and the engineer (Mr J. R. Hughes) was asked to report on the practicability of providing gates to cut off a portion of the council property from Jersey Lane. At a meeting of the council last evening the engineer submitted the following report: “To erect gates across the right-of-way is impracticable owing to the necessity of providing access to the property adjoining the Council Chambers, and alternately, to erect a fence and gates on the council property would not facilitate easy handling of the motor vehicles in and out to the store and garage. The matter of providing lock-up garages has been discussed with the electrical engineer. At present the motor vehicles are garaged under cover, with one end open, and I suggest that to provide security for the lorries and movable fittings doors be provided to cover the openings. There are two openings each _lsft by Bft high, and it is proposed to build four sets of doors, each made up in three leaves, and run on a track, painted complete, at an estimated cost of £40.” The council authorised the work to bo done.
