LATE MR C. N. CLAUSEN

CITY COUNCIL TRIBUTES. VALUED SERVICE. Tributes to the memory of the late Mr C. N. Clausen, who served on the Palmerston North .Borough Council for three terms, were paid at a meeting of the City Council, last evening a resolution of condolence with the relatives being carried. Since the council’s'last meeting, said the Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford), it was his sad duty to report, the city had lost one of its best-known and respected citizens, also one of its pioneers, in the person of the late Mr Clausen. The late gentleman had been very closely associated with the early years of Palmerston North, and lie had taken a keen interest in its affairs right up to the last. He had been a member of the council for 13 years, serving in three different periods. It had been the speaker’s pleasure to sit at the council table with Mr Clausen for one term; Mr Clausen’s opinions had aldays been received with respect. He had been always willing to help with any worthy cause or in a case of suitering and hardship. The Mayor moved that the council place on record sincere appreciation of tile service rendered the city by the late gentleman and that a letter of condolence be forwarded to the relatives. Supporting the Mayor, Cr <T. Hodgens, M.P , said that when he had sat on the council with the late Mr Clausen tlie latter had been an experienced councillor and his counsel had been very helpful to a new member. The speaker had bad frequent contact with the late Mr Clausen, whose word had been his bond. Characters like that of the late gentleman were few and far between. The regard in which lie bad been held would be some consolation to the relatives lie had left behind. Cr G. Tremaine added his tribute, saying no more fitting description of the late Mr Clausen could bo given than to say lie had been one of Nature s gentlemen. The motion was then carried in silence.
