DEBATING SOCIETY.
WEEKLY MEETING. The weekly meeting of the Palmerston North Literary anti Debating Society was held last evening, there being a large number prsent. The first part was occupied with impromptu speeches, the speakers and subjects being:—Mr W. M. Huntington, “Is Divorce Being Made Too Easy?”; Mr J. S. Hornblow, “Are Women Better Debaters than Men?”; Mrs. Burnett, “Are Women Becoming Too Masculine?”; Mr Philpott, “Is an Increase in Birthrate Preferable to Immigration?”; Mr Shnw, “Should Men Assist in Domestic Duties?” The second part was spent on a debate, the subject of which wjjs : “That the Public Hospitals Should be Owned and Controlled by the State.” Those taking part wore Mr Burnett, Mrs Tidswell, Mr McPhee, Miss McGrath, Miss Christian and Mrs Walker. Mr A. E. Wright acted as adjudicator and awarded tho verdict to the negative side. Tho S. M. Carlton Medal was awarded to Mrs Tidswell, and the Murray Cup to Mr Hornblow. A vote of thanks was voted to Mr AVright for his valuable criticism. Regret was expressed at the absence through indisposition of the hon. secretary, Mr E. C. Watson, and Mr H. J. King acted in his stead. Mr T. C. Watson, the chairman, has again generously presented a valuable silver cup for competition in the ladies’ section. His action met with hearty applause from all present.
