DRAINAGE OPERATIONS.

MANAWATU BOARD. Tire monthly meeting of the Manawatu Drainage Board was held yesterday, Mr P. G. Mildon presiding. Also present were Messrs J. Collis, H. 11. Green, W. E. Thomas and D. Prouse, while leave of absence was granted to Mr E. J. Russell. The chairman and Mr Collis reporter] having inspected the drain on Gillespie’s Line, attention having been drawn to the matter by Mr A. R. McCulloch in a letter read at the previous meeting. The matter, it was stated, had heen attended to. Tho clerk reported having written to the Labour Department .* ith reference to the extension of the authority under scheme No. Id. A reply had been received agreeing to extension of the subsidy for six months from August I. The board intends to employ the present number of men (increased to 20) for the first three months and to reduce the number by half for the subsequent three months. Reporting on the inspection of Burke’s drain, the chairman said he was well satisfied with the work done. Air E. Siddells wrote drawing attention to the fact that nothing had been done to the drain on his farm on Flyger’s Line, Kairanga. He said that there was three feet of water in the drain and should there be heavy rain the property would he badly flooded.— It was decided to inspect the drain later in the day. It was also decided to give the board’s employees a holiday on Wednesday on the occasion of the Springl>oks’ match a.t Palmerston North. Air Collis thought a half-day would be sufficient, but other members disagreed. “If they are going to see the match they will require the full day,” said tho chairman. Tho financial statement showed a debit balance of £2538 15s. It was decided to ask the Railway Department to clear the drain on the east side of the railway line from Foxton Line railway crossing to the freezing works. It was stated that settlers in the locality were concerned about the state of the drain. The overseer (Air M. AVilson) reported that steady progress had been made with the improvement work on Burke’s drain. AVire rope required had come to hand and had l>een fitted. The fascine work on Whiskey Creek had l>een attended to and repairs to the stop-banks on the Af.ong.aone Stream were receiving attention. Air Young’s request in regard to Rongotea Road liad been acceded to. Drain cleaning by day work had been completed on Guy and AlcCtilloch’s, Thomas’s, Shannon’s, Satherley’s. Lovelock’s, Collins’s and Stubbs's, Jones’s, Cameron’s Line (fop end), Cheetlnim’s and Jnckeytown factory drain. All the contract draining had been completed with the exception of Whiskey Creek. Cameron’s Line and Kairanga-Bmmythorpe road.
