RANGER WINS

AMERICA’S CUP RACE. SECOND OF SERIES. ENDEAVOUR II BEATEN. ~ (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received August 3, 10.50 a.m. NEW YORK, Aug. 2.

Mr Harold Vandervilt’s Ranger won the second America’s Cup race, beating the English challenger, Endeavour 11.

Despite crossing the starting line ahead and maintaining a 700-yards lead lor the first hour in a seven-mile south by west breeze, the Endeavour rapidly began to fall behind the Ranger. The American boat caught up with the Endeavour before the end of the first leg and was 1.7 miles ahead ,at the ten-mile mark, 2.25 miles behind .tvlien the run home started and approximately 2.5 miles behind when they finished. The British boat was sailing smartly in a stiffening 12-mile wind at the end. and in a longer race she might*have made a better showing but, as it was, she suffered one of the most serious defeats in the history of the cup. Mr Sopwith has requested a one-day rest under the rules. The next contest therefore will be held on Wednesday. To-day’s race was for the most part run in a heavy mist.

The yacht winning four out of seven races becomes the holder of the cup. The Ranger has now won two races.
