SCHOOL COMMITTEES
MONTHLY MEETINGS. TERRACE END SCHOOL. The monthly meeting of the Terrace End School Committee was held last evening, Mr W. B. Tennent presiding over a full attendance of members. It was decided to purchase two oak trees for planting at an official Arbor Day ceremony at the school an August 11. ‘ . The committee appointed to report on the purchase of a motor mower recommended that the matter be held over, and this was agreed to. A letter from the Education Board indicated that the defects in the central heating system were under repair. . ■ • ~ The chairman’s action in authorising a half-holiday for the Springboks Rugby match to day was approved. Accounts were passed for payment, and the treasurer stated that the debit balance would be about £37. The visiting committee reported that everything at the school was in good order. Messrs Tennent and H. Blackwood were appointed the visiting committee for the coming month. The secretary reported haying attended a meeting in connection with the milk-in-schools scheme, stating that, although certain difficulties were being encountered, it was hoped to have the scheme in operation for next term. It was decided to ask Mr J. D. Stevens to deliver the address at the Arbor Day ceremony and that Mr T. F Fairbrother (a former headmaster) and Mr A. W. Thompson (present headmaster) should plant the trees. Mr Thompson reported as follows: “The number on the roll is 616 and daily attendances are good, the highest during the month being 592. The hospital roll is 14. Owing to illness, Miss V. Clover was absent for a week and resumed duty on Monday last. The school was closed for the week ending July 23, when several teachers attended the New Education Conference in AV-ellington. The conference was a decided success and much benefit will be derived from the lectures of eminent overseas educationalistsNurse Ferguson has been transferred to the Central Clinic and her place has been taken by Nurse Hagan. Mr E. H. Lange, agricultural instructor, is at present paying an official visit to the school. The visiting committee, Messrs J. IC. Paton and H. Milne, have visited the school. RUSSELL STREET SCHOOL. The monthly meeting of the Russell Street School Committee was held last eveuing, Mr J. A. Grant presiding. Accounts totalling £l9 13s 6d were passed for payment. In his report, the headmaster (Mr F. C Campbell) stated that the roll stood’at 275, the attendance yesterday being 262. The weekly averages for the month had been 253, 259, and 255. The school had been closed during the week ended July 23. The Wanganui Education Board had declared August 18 to be observed as Arbor Day. The headmaster intimated Ills desire to know the committee’s intentions relative to the observance of that day. The inter-school Rugby season had closed, the school occupying the third rung on the ladder. The touring team was at present being selected, several of the Rusell Strseet School hoys being under consideration. Mr Campbell acknowledged with thanks receipt from the city librarian of a consignment of books. . , , The chairman was instructed to confer with the headmaster on the observance of Arbor Day.
