MILK IN SCHOOLS

COMMENCING NEXT TERM. OPERATION*IN CITY. That the milk-in-schools scheme for Palmerston North would in all probability come into operation at the commencement of next term was the interesting information divulged to last evening’s meetings of the Russell Street and Terrace End School Committees. Speaking at the Russell Street School, Mr J. A. Grant (chairman) said that it had been stated at the last meeting that the work of pasteurisation would be undertaken at Massey College, and distribution would be carried out from there. •‘The only thing still required is to arrange a supply of raw milk to the pasteuriser, and I understand that a departmental official has been sent to the city with instructions to remain until he has arranged a supply. With the passing of the winter, that should become more easy,” said Mr Grant. “1 expect that the supply will be available by the commencement of the next term.” No burden of washing containers would fall on school staffs, explained Mr Grant. The milk would be delivered in crates of 24 half-pint bottles, with straws, and after the milk was used, the bottles would be similarly removed to the cleanser. As the milk would be delivered only a short while before it was issued to the children each morning, provision of storage cabinets would be unnecessary. The report presented at the Terrace End School was along similai* lines, gratification being expressed that the major difficulties experienced earlier were gradually being overcome. In reply to a question, the chairman (Mr \V. B. Tennent) said that the scheme would operate all the year round.
