WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) APR’I, Aug. 5. Instead of having tho usual monthly meet ing in the afternoon, the Womens Institute meeting was held on Tuesday evening and every member was asked to bring a gentleman, A most delightful tune was spent, many gentlemen being present and >a very large gathering of members. Mis AW. Bird (president) extended a warm welcome to all. Mrs Harlan.d (bon. secrotary) presented the minutes and correspondence. Two now members wero welcomed, Mrs Lc Qucsne and Miss D. Ewan. Mrs H. L. Osborne had kindly undertaken to ice tho birthday cake. Business completed, the choir, under tho leadership of Mrs H. h. Osborne, sang two items in unison, funiculi, Funicula” and “Arise O! Sun Mis Christian, of Palmerston North, was then introduced and gave a most interesting taw on “Life in the South Sea Islands. She was given a most appreciative hearing. Jfollow was a rehearsed play-reading, Sorvants,” most excellently prcscntccl and produced by Mrs W Duncan The following was the east:—Mrs Harlond Misses Madge and Mairo McKay, Mwdames l. Osborne, J. C. Osborne, and J. Gawood. A most interesting golden thread roll ea was given, entitled “New Zealand is Famous For and led. by Mrs W. Duncan (the organiser of this feature). Many most interesting items were presented, such as “The Plunket Society, Greenstone, “Lambs, Wool and Kauri, Ihe Kings Corporal” and many others. Mrs Christian (judge) awarded the prue to Mrs A. W Bird who spoke about the Plunket Society, and in the men’s section to Mr j C Osborne whose subject was the Waiapt, Forest. Supper followed served by the hostesses, Mcedamos M.E. A Mar tin, W. Hogan, L. Guy, and Miss Doughty. Progressive competitions were, then enjoyed and caused much fun and interest. Ihe winners in tho monthly points competitions wero as follow: —Embroidered apron, Mrs McNicol 1. Miss Madge McKay 2, Miss M. Harland 3; best flower in the garden, Miss Madge McKay 1, Mrs Pettigrew 2 Miss M. Pettigrew 3; puff, pastry. Miss Madge McKay 1, No. ■ 3 2, Mrs . Stanley 3 To conclude, community singing was enjoyed with Mrs H. L. Osborne at the piano and Mrs J. C. Osborne leadci. Ihe choir sang “Good-bvc from White Hoi so Inn” and the evening closed with a sote of thanks and cheers from tho men folk. The delegates appointed for the gioup meeting at Cheltenham next month are Mesdames G. Watkins and J. Gawood.
PERSONAL. Mrs Howse is the guest of her sister, Mrs Cawood, of Norsewood Road. Messrs C Osborne and Whit Pratt were visitors to New Plymouth last week-end to soo the Springboks in action. A very large number of Apiti people visited Palnierston North, yesterday for the big football match. About 18 of the local schoolboys were able to witness the Springboks match m Palmerston North yesterday. Mrs Christian, of Palmerston North, has been the guest of Mr and Mrs C. Stanley. Mr Ernesr Schmidt arrived from Sydney yesterday morning and is staying in Kimbolton, after a splendid trip. Mrs 1. Os; borne is spending a few days at, Pin Pin with 'Mr and Mrs C. Searle. Mr Johannes Andersen, of Wellington, is to ho the speakor at tho meeting next month of the Oroua group of Women’s Institutes.
