RUN OF PLAY.

* SCORING DESCRIBED. MANAWATU’S EARLY DASH. Manawatu, who were led on to the field by R. McKenzie, appeared to have somewhat the better of the run of play in the first 20 minutes, hut then eased up. and the tide of the game turned rapidly. Except for occasional rallies bj- tlie Manawatu forwards, the Springboks, using their pace and short passing cleverly, dominated the game in the second spell. The teams took the field as follow: Manawatu.—M. Waldin, H. Waugh, G. Wasley, D. Buick, J. Nicol. Jack Finlay, C. Edlin, 0. Newman, G. Terry, W. Powell, A. G. Williams. R. McKenzie, E. Fell, R. Ewart, W. Sullivan.

South Africa.—G. Brand, P. Lyster, J. White, J. Hester, D. Craven, T. Harris, G. Lochner, H. Watt, W. Bastard, P. Nel, W. Bergh, C. Strahan, J-Lotz, S. G. Loinv,'C, B. Jennings. Nel kicked off and the hall went down to the Manawatu twenty-five line, where a scrum ensued, and after a brief period Finlay kicked through, following un fast to tackle as Brand cleared beautifully. Finlay was again prominent a minute later, while McKenzie was active in the line-outs. Manawatu were penalised, and Craven returned play from midfield to tlieir territory. Manawatu broke through, hut White lined nicely. Williams started a forward movement which saw Manawatu break through in a good rush, but Brand raced hack to scoop up tlie ball and line out, South Africa haying a “life.” Powell failed narrowly with a penalty kick for Manawatu and_ then Sullivan charged down the hall ’as Brand attempted to clear close to his line. Endeavouring to save, the Springboks were caught off-side, but Finlay missed a comparatively easy chance to goal. SPRINGBOKS IN DANGER, Manawatu were threatening serious danger and, when tlie Springboks again mishandled Lochner was caught in possession. McKenzie secured the ball to battle his way through the ruck and Waugh made a brief run before centring for Finlay to race through, the Springboks having to kick tlie Hall dead to. save. Watt came through fast to open up a movement for the Springboks, and Craven tried to crash Ins way through in company with Lyster after Waldin had put tlie hall straight up in the air in attempting to dear, hut it went into touch, Edlin kicked through and Buick picked up the ball beautifully to make a short tricky run. but Manawatu were penalised. There was an exciting moment when Waugh made another dash and centred. Fell tore lip to dive over, but was just beaten for the touch-down. Wasley found the line when the Springl>oks attempted to dear. Receiving from the scrum, Finlay screwed round sharply and found touch dose to the line. Next he secured the ball to rush over, but was recalled for an infringment. Manawatu were again penalised for a breach in the scrum, and the Springboks cleared.

“Fanie” Lomv was prominent _ in leading loose rushes by the visitors who, with a series of short snappy rushes, worked their way close to the Manawatu line. Bester secured, but McKenzie bullocked his way through and the Manawatu forwards cleared in a great rally. Play had been in progress 28 minutes when Brand kicked a nice penalty goal for the Springboks from well out. the ball soaring high and just dropping over the bar. Springboks fl. Manawatu 0.

PRESSURE ON MANAWATU. Edlin attempted to cut through and then Wald in failed with an attempt to drop-kick a goal, the Springboks being forced to carry the ball back over their own line for the third time. Nothing came of the ensuing scrum. Bergli and Bester was associated in a powerful run, the latter gathering in the ball beautifully. It soon broke down, however. Finlay was collared in opening lip a movement, but Waldin saved. Finlay opened up another movement, but Lochner got Nicol and broke it up. Nel was prominent in a Springbok attack, but Wasley found touch. Manawatu spent ten minutes deep in their own territory under heavy pressure and Waugh, bustled by Lyster. kicked out. Craven and Lotz both tried to burst their way over in the corner, where the Manawatu forwards were battling hard. Craven, exploiting the dive pass, then sent Lyster away like a flash and the winger cut straight through in a diagonal run to ground the ball behind the post,s. Brand converted half a minute before the end of the spell: Springboks 8, Manawatu 0. WALDIN RECOVERS WELL.

Manawatu faced a slight breeze when the teams turned round for the second spell. Bergh accepted the ball to race through, but his pass was not accepted, and Waldin made a great recovery to clear for Manawatu. However, he was caught in possession when Nel carried the ball through. Play was held up temporarily while Bas-

tard received attention for a face injury. Craven then sent the ball to Harris, who threw out a long low pass, Lj-ster snapping up . the ball beautifully to cross in his stride in the corner, the whole Manawatu backline being out of position. Brand narrowly failed with the kick. Springboks 11, Manawatu 0. SCORE MOUNTS RAPIDLY.

With the second spell only in progress for seven minutes, Bester raced up the line and kicked ahead when tackled by Waldin. Coming up at top speed, Lochner easily beat the defenders to chase the ball over the line for an easy try. Brand put the ball just inside the posts, and the Springboks increased their lead: Springboks IC, Manawatu 0.

Edlin then made a pretty opening to transfer to Newman, who went straight to the line and dived over for Manawatu’s only try amid tremendous enthusiasm. Finlay’s kick struck the crossbar and rebounded. Manawatu 3, Springboks 16. Edlin was going in great style at this stage and twice put Manawatu strongly on the attack, but infringements eased the situation for the Springboks. Harris was caught in possession by Newman, but got away again only for Wasley to field the ball and find the line. The Manawatu forwards were rucking just as fiercely as the Springboks, but Nel came through fast, Waldin being injured temporarily in stopping him. A free kick brought relief to Manawatu.

Craven opened up a splendid movement, but Harris mishandled and Manawatu came through. However, repeated infringements were _ costing them dearly, and Brand kicked a beautiful penalty go |1 from wide out. Springboks 19, Manawatu 3. Brand gave the crowd a shock when he steadied up ten yards inside the half-way line and drop-kicked for the goal, the ball swerving a foot ouside the posts- Harris then gathered in the ball beautifully in the loose and ran through to hand on to Watt, who raced over almost unopposed by the posts. Brand converted. Springboks 24, Manawatu 3.

Harris made another dazzling run through the Manawatu team, but lost his supports. BRAND THRILLS.

Brand got the ball again to astonish the spectators as he sent it soaring high for the posts, but just missed, and a minute later, for ti e third time, he drop-kicked from Tight on the lialf-way line, the ball sailing at high speed straight between the posts. Springboks 28, Manawatu 3.

Led by McKenzie, Manawatu got on tlie move again, but Brand drove them back. Bester. secured to make a fast run, but was pulled down from behind by Buick when he tried to cut past Waldin. However, the Springboks came hard again, and Bastard dived over. Brand’s kick just missed. Springboks .31, Manawatu 3.

Bester raced away to punt past Waldin, and looked to be going for the easiest of tries when Wasley came tearing up to kick the ball dead. Manawatu were penalised again, and Brand kicked tlie easiest of goals.

Springboks 34, Manawatu 3. Harris came through and picked up again to send Lochner and Bester away, but the latter knocked on with an open line in front. Suddenly “Fanie” Louw snatched up the ball from the loose and charged straight through, sprinting 25 yards to ground it under the posts. Brand converted. Lyster- raced away up the wing, but Waldin got him as lie tried to jump out'-,of thq . tackle. The final score was : . Springboks 39, Manawatu 3. Dr. M. Dickson, of Christchurch, was tlie referee.
