MRS PUTNAM’S SCARF USED. AVIATRIX’S DEATH DENIED. Recoivcd August 6, 9.55 a.m. NEW YORK, Aug. 5. Federal operatives have arrested Wilbur Rothar, a janitor living with his wife and eight children, on a charge of .attempted extortion from Mr Putnam, husband of the missing aviatrix, Mrs Amelia Earhart Putnam. Rothar last month, while viewing Mrs Putnam landing at a local air field, picked up the aviatrix’s scarf, which had been blown off by the wind. Rothar used the scarf in an effort to convince Air Putnam that his wife is still alive, having been rescued by ail arms-running ship from an island near Now Guinea. He demanded 2000 dollars for her safe return.
