RUMOURS DENIED
3.15 P.M. EDITION.
DUCHESS OF WINDSOR. QUEEN ALEXANDRA’S JEWELS. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received August 6, 12.20 p.m. LONDON, Aug. 5. “The Duchess of Windsor has never had any of Queen Alexandra’s jewels,” states a correspondent to the London Star, for whose reliability the Star vouches. The article quotes Mrs Helena Normanton, the well-known woman barrister, who visited the Duchess before the wedding, who says with the fullest approval of then Miss Warfield: “The Duke of Windsor never at any time inherited any jewellery from any member of the Royal Family. has never been in possession of any jewellery ever owned by Queen Alexandra.”
The article deals with 'rumours emanating from the French Press that the Duchess has lent a ready ear to Nazi propaganda, which apparently originated in the unfounded rumour that she was a member of Herr von Ribbentrop’s circle, regarding which Miss Warfield told Mrs Normanton that she was in Herr von Ribbentrop’s company only twice, and at receptions, never alone. She never had had more than a few words of small talk. “I took no interest in politics,” said Miss Warfield.
The article says that the Duke of Windsor has so far made no answer to his traducers, but his friends know how deeply he has been wounded by the slanderous tongues. It has hurt and dismayed him to find how widespread has been the circulation of the most fantastic rumours about the Duchess and himself.
