SOUTH ISLAND RAILWAY.
PROGRESS OF MAIN TRUNK. SECOND YEAR’S WORK. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 6. Entering the second year of activity since its resumption by the present Government, the work on the construction of the South Island Main Trunk railway northwards from Parnassus has reached a stage at which the progress is becoming steadily more pronounced and within two months the lino itself will begin to take shape. It is expected that the spanning of the Leader River with a steel and concrete bridge will bo completed about the end of September and at that time it is intended to commence lay-* ing the plates for the first section of the extension. The material for 15 miles of permanent way has arrived at Parnassus and it is considered likely that in little more than 12 months the line will be opened as far north as Hundaloe for the transport of all forms of traffic. The railhead will then he within 22 miles of Kaikoura.
