Bred to Stay. Rockingham, winner of the maiden event at Christchurch last Saturday, is bred to stay. His sire, Tidal, has already got one good class stayer in Floodtide, also another prospective middle distance performer in Tidewaiter, and his dam, Crown Gem, is a half-sister to Indigo, who dead-heated with Warstep in the New Zealand Cup. She is out of Mungista, who was a sister to All Rod, and Munjcct and the granddam of Sasanof. Jenkins to Ride. Injured at the Wanganui winter meeting in June, A. Jenkins has recovered and will ride Clarion Call in his Grand National engagements. He schooled the gelding prior to his departure from Marton. Whenever available Jenkins has always been Clarion Call’s jockey, and he rode him'at Riccarton last August. Test Over Mile. F. Davis gave Francis Drake and Courtcraft a run over a mile at Wanganui earlier in the week. Francis Drake, on the inner, made the pace in the early stages, but Courtcraft was always within a length of his companion and going along nicely. They ran the first three furlongs in sec and the half in 51sec. Once straightened up Courtcraft drew level and the pair finished together in 1.454, both going well within themselves over the last bit. It was a good gallop on the part of both colts. Courtcraft appeared to have most in reserve at the end, but Francis Drake alsG promises to play his part well in his tlirec-year-old engagements in Australia. Possibility of Division. There is just a chance that a division will be required in the Avonhead Handicap at Riccarton next Tuesday, as 41 horees still remain in the field. Such a division was required three years ago. when the safety margin wa3 given as 28. Sir Hugh Improved.

Sir Hugh, who ran a good race for second in the Kennels Hack Handicap at Riccarton last Saturday, looks likely to bo more prominent very shortly. This Philamor four-year-old has failed to add to his successes since he scored attractively in last year’s Cashmere Plate on Grand National Day, but ho has not had a great deal of racing.

Kelly Comes Back. After being off the 6cene for several weeks, Kelly has been rocommissioncd by F. Gilchrist at Elloralio and ho appears in nice order to commence another preparation. Kelly gave an indication of his true worth toward the end of last season, when ho accounted for tho Avondalo Autumn Handicap, after having run second in tho President’s Handicap and third in the H. 0. Nolan Handicap at Ellerslie the previous week, and, as he possesses staying ability above tho average, his prospects in the new term appear bright.

Tybalt to Resume. Tybalt, who recently joined Gilchrist’s team at Ellerslie, has also completed _ a spell and bo is to commence work immediately. Tybalt is a good performer when right and has only to strike form to make his presence felt at the spring fixtures. The other members of Gilchrist’s team in work are Fleetwind, Haputalc, White Foam, file Romney—Thurnley colt and First Gold Money. The last-named is a two-year-old filly by Captain Bunsby from Gold Money and is owned by her breeder, Mr W. Kemp.

Sky Pilot Spelling. Sky Pilot, the southern steeplechaser who did well nt Elleralio, has been returned to his owner at Hororata, and will bo treated to a spell until the early part of next year. He was kept nt his trainer’s establishment alter returning- from Trcntham, and although still showing slight signs of lameness ho has made _ a good recovery from his severe stifle injury sustained during the running of the Wellington Steeplechase. Billy Boy’s Condition. Little has been heard of Billy Boy since he was withdrawn from tho Grand National Steeplechase, but he has been doing daily road work, and to all appearances is as lit ns ever lie has been. -\lt has not, however, been deemed wise to give him any track work. His owner-trainer, R Lewis, was naturally disappointed in not being able to have the veteran fit enough to contest bis fifth National, but still has hopes of racing him on the third day of the meeting. In the meantime, Billy Boy is to be taken to the course on Tuesday, and ho will at least have tho honour of being on tho scene of his old triumphs when another Grand National Steeplechase is being decided.

Peter’s Pence. Peter’s Pence, by Mercian King from Lady Thurnham, by Thurnham from Seatonolla, has joined the track workers at EUei'olic. He is an aged gelding, but has done little racing during tho last two seasons. At the Taranaki-Wanganui Hunt meeting held in 1934 Peter’s Pence beat a large field in a five-furlong race and was placed subsequently in another minor event. Droll Recommissioned. After being indulged in a spell since last autumn Droll has been recommissioned by P. Scally. Tho daughter of Captain Bunsby and Drolotique was not overtaxed last season, hut her form taken all round was promising. She has been hacked "around the roads for somo weeks and is in good order to begin serious work, having furnished a good deal during her spell. Returned to His Owner. The lease of Bazaine having practically expired, he was returned to his owner, Mr F. J. Attfield, of Palmerston North, after tho conclusion of tho Poverty Bay meeting. As a member of H. Dulieu’s stable Bazaine raced very consistently and in 15 starts ran two firsts, five seconds and four thirds. As he won £304 in stake money during just ever eight months in training at New Plymouth ho more than paid his way.
