WEST END SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. Mr G. Tremaine presided over the meeting of tho West End School Committee last evening. Others present were Messrs A. Bcnkcth (secretary), \V. E. Schwabe, H. W. Jackson (beadmaster), A. E. Penfold, J. H. Dalai el and A. McLean. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs A. W. Just and IV. Collins. The Wanganui Education Board notified an additional grant ior ground improvements.—lt was resolved to accept a tender received for the balance of the surfacing of tho inner area and to thank the board for its offer of assistance. It was also decided to advise the board of tho committee's acceptance of the tender. A letter from the Manawatu-W ai* rarapa Employers’ Association with reference to the musicians’ award stated:—“ln regard to your application to he struck out as a party to the musicians’ award, it would be advisablo for you to bo in a position to give evidence in support of your application when the matter is being considered by the Arbitration Court at its sitting which commences at Palmerston North on tho 12th inst. I would suggest that you send me a full statement along the lines of evidence that you would give. It will lie necessary to bo prepared tor questions and cross-examination by the union’s representatives. As soon as a definite time can be arranged for your evidence to be heard, 1 will advise you accordingly.” —The letter was received, it being decided to draw up a statement.
The chairman reported on the milk-in-schools scheme, stating that the West End School would 'be either the first or tho last school to receive a daily supply, according t-o the route taken by the roundsman. It was resolved to hold the matter of providing a cabinet for the milk in abeyance until more is known of the scheme.
The report of the headmaster (Mr H. W. Jackson) was adopted as under:—“Tho roll number is 394 with an average attendance during the last four weeks of 367.7. Tlie health of the children is good. The school nurse (Miss McGregor) is at present visiting the school to test the eyesight of the children. The Wanganui Education Board has fixed August 11 as Arbor Day and I shall be pleased to know what form the committee desire th© function to take. The smoke from the chimney in Standard IV room sometimes comes through the wall into the next room. I think it advisable to have the ohim nev inspected. Also a new grate is required for the Standard 5 room fireplace. Arrangements for the hall are proceeding smoothly and tickets are selling reasonably well. The school breaks up for the spring vacation on the 20th inst. and resumes on Sep-
tember C. Miss Rough has been absent from duty ior three days through ill-health.” . . . It was decided to request the hoard to make an inspection ot the defer-, live chimney and of the need lor a new crate. . . . , Accounts passed for payment total led £22 14s /d. . The matter of fittingly celebrating Arbor Day was left to the chairman. A vote of thanks was passed to Air Dalziel for providing a heating apparatus for the doorkeeper on danco evenings.
Prior to the monthly meeting of the committee a meeting of the combined ladies’ and men’s committees was held for the purpose of completing tho arrangements for the school s annual ball.
