WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED.
MINISTER’S INDICATION. Per Press Association. HAWERA, Aug. 7. Hon. P. C. Webb conferred with local bodies here to-day and offered, on behalf of the Government, to provide £2700 to employ ,42 men on fulltime work at £4 a week for four months. Though 167 unemployed men are registered at Hawera, it was found that neither the borough nor the county could avail itself of the Minister’s offer, because there was no work suitable for the unemployed. Mr Webb said it might be necessary to draft the men to work in other districts. The men. whether married or single, could he sent to work in camps in the baekblocks; if they refused to go, they ran the risk of being put off sustenance.
