DOMINION LOSES TOSS. DUNNING BOWLS WELL. (From the Special Correspondent of the United Press Association with tig; Team.) CHELMSFORD, Aug. 7. Another “Saturday toss” condemned the New Zealand cricketers to a day in the field in sweltering heat and gave Essex the advantage of an easy wicket when a match was begun to-day on the pretty ground at Chelmstoru. Cowie and Dunning reappeared and howled for long periods without apparent distress, their physical fitness evidently being unimpaired by their recent enforced idleness. Essex made a fine start, the second century being raised with only one wicket down. Pago dissolved a productive partnership and Cowie and Dunning, using the second new ball, dismissed the next four quickly, five wickets, falling for 29 runs, including that of Nichols, a member of Gilligan’s team.
Dunning had a fine spell after tea, taking three wickets for three runs, including two with successive balls. The Essex innings, which once promised a very high score, finished abruptly with quite a moderate total, considering the excellence of the wicket, the easiness of which made, more praiseworthy the effectiveness of Cowie and Dunning. New Zealand batted for only an hour, Vivian giving a remarkable display, hitting ’ eight fours, two sixers and only four singles. The first fifty was made in half an hour. The sixers were both hit out of the ground. The five thousand spectators were warmly appreciative. Hadlee’s steady inings looked almost slow by comparison. Scores : ESSEX. First Innings.
