BULLS
(From Our Own Correspondent.) BULBS, Aug. 6. The 6th birthday of the Bulls Women’s Institute was celebrated in the Town i I all on Monday, Mrs Huddleston presiding over a large and happy gathering. A welcome was extended to visitors from 'iaupo, Ohakca, Sanson, Rongotea, Makino, Stanway, Marton Junction,Carnarvon and Glen Oroua. A delightful programme ccinprised a tableau, “Comrades and Friends, by members of the Stanway Institute; vocal solos by Mrs Aird (Rongotea), who was accompanied by Mrs Churchill (Rongotca); solos by Mrs Eylcs; a pianotorto duet by Mesdames Carson and Ross; elocutionary items by Mrs Witberington; and an amusing play, “A Marriage lias been Disarranged,” by Obakea members. Ihe newly-formed Ulee Circle contributed several items. All were warmly, applauded. Mrs Carson, who has so willingly acted as pianiste for the past five yeans, was presented with a handsome crystal vase as a mark of appreciation of her valued service©. Members then adjourned to the supper room, where a tastv afternoon tea was served, the tables being artistically decorated with spring blooms. A feature was the beautiful birthday cake, kindly donated by Mr 11. H. W ilson (ltulls), who was duly ttanked. Mrs Dwyer lit the candles, which were extinguished by Mrs Harris, and the birthday cake was cut by the vice-president, Mrs JSscott. Rirthdav greetings were received from members of visiting institutes, and a telegram was read from members cf the Awahun Institute. The president thanked all who had so willingly helped to make the function such a success. A sugar-bag apron com petition resulted as follows: Mrs Shop herd 1, Mrs Ross 2. Mrs F.scott 3. Great .interest, was. taken in the exhibition of handcrafts, amongst which was a patchwork quilt sewn by hand by a lady of 86 years. Other fine exhibits included a willow clothes-basket, and beautiful work such as a feather kit, a seagrass stool, rood work, paper rope work, fine needle work, coloured wood, and pottery work. An invitation was received to the Makino Institute’s birthday. The group meeting will bo held at Halcombe, the competitions being an cggless fruit cake and ganger nuts. Many varied and useful gifts were received for the Willard Home. The competitions for September will be: A pot cf marmalade, tho_ best bloom in the garden, and “something new from something old.”
