MURDER OF DUKE.

DESCENDANT OF COLUMBUS. FORCED TO SIGN WILL FIRST. LONDON. Aug. 9. The Milan correspondent of the Time* says the story of the murder at Madrid some time ago of Cristobal Colon, the aged Duke of Veragua, and last descendant of Christopher Columbus, is now revealed. He did not meddle in politics, and in view of this the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Senor del Vayo) assured the Ambassadors of Chile and Argentina, who regarded him as a sacred figure, that he was perfectly safe. One of his dependants, Ramirez El Cojo, the self-appointed leader of a marauding band, broke into his palace and carried off Colon with the Marquis •of Aguila Fuente. The Ambassadors vainly enlisted Senor Del Vayo’s aid. Eventually the Argentirie Ambassador’s typist ascertained that the duke and the marquis were prisoners at a former convent at San Domestico. The Government gave the Ambassadors an order for their release, but El Cojo told them to return next day. Meanwhile, pretending it would save his life, he compelled the duke to sign a will bequeathing to El Cojo his estate. El Cojo then bundled the duke and the marquis into a motor-car and shot both dead in the forest of Bosco del Pardo.
