EVACUATION FROM SHANGHAI
A TEMPORARY TRUCE
(United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received August 16, 12.15 p.m. LONDON, Aug. 15. The Japanese Embassy in London, citing the loss of life and property from the “outrageous” bombing of the International Settlement, announces that the Japanese Cabinet is sending surgeons, medical” comforts and ambulance facilities to the victims, irrespective of nationality „ The situation was discussed at -a conference at Whitehall between the representatives of the War Office, the Admiralty and the Air Force, when it was decided to move a battalion of Ulster Rifles from Hong Kong to Shanghai to evacuate a number of Britons, pursuant to which the Consul-General in Shanghai is arranging to evacuate women and children to Hong Kong on August 17. The evacuation of American women and children from Woosung will begin to-morrow. A temporary truce will permit tenders to_ pass the Japanese warships in the river. A strong protest has been lodged with the Nanking Government in connection with the bombing of the International Settlement. England, America and France are making representations to Tokio and Nanking in the hope ot obtaining the withdrawal of the Chinese and Japanese troops from the areas immediately adjacent to the Japanese bases of operations. The casualties are now computed at 1167 dead.and 1328 wounded No further bombs have been dropped on the settlement, but the Chinese battel les at Haichang, north of Hongkow, set fire to the Japanese naval attache s office and damaged the landing party s headquarters, killing a sub-lieutenant. The curfew lias been introduced in the International Settlement. The streets in the French concession were deserted by ten p.m. A quarter of a million Chinese' refugees have already hidden themselves in the empty houses and and the honeycomb of alleyways’. Only ten days’ supply of rice is available for the refugees, out the Municipal Council has ordered 10,IKJU tons from Hong Kong.
