STERN RESISTANCE.
CHINESE AIR FORCE
AVELLINGTON, Aug. 17. The Chinese Consul in Wellington received the following cablegram from Nanking to-day. Thrilling air battles occurred around Nanking this morning, when Japanese aeroplanes twice attempted to raid the city. Both attempts proved abortive, due to the Chinese air force's stern resistance. Three Japanese ’planes were shot down at Chuyung, approximately 80 kilometres south-east of Nanking, and two were brought down at A'angchow. Chinese troops at Shanghai made a determined attack on the Japanese strongholds in the north Szechuen road and captured the Japanese naval club near their naval headquarters. The Japanese Embassy and Consular stn.fFs will be leaving Nanking at 4 o’clock this afternoon, and after their departure there will be no more Japanese here.
