STOLEN BEE HIVES
THREE MONTHS’ GAOL. “Under the circumstances I must give a term of imprisonment, as there has been systematic robbing of hives,” commented Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, to-day, when Harold Bernard Irwin, aged 23, of Opiki, who appeared on summons, was charged with the theft, on July 15, of one nucleus of bees, valued at 30s; with the theft, on October 23, at Itangiotu. of a hive of bees, valued at £3 10s; and with the theft, at Tiakitahuna, on October 30, of another hive of boos, valued at £3 10s. The property in each case was that of John Dale.
Detective-Sergeant Meiklejohn stated that over a long period complainant had missed hives from apiaries he had about the district, and he had lost in all eight hives. On a visit to defendant’s property with the apiary instructor, he had identified some of the missing property, including two hives. The season’s production from each of these was valued at £2. Defendant had admitted stealing .two hives and accessories.
Defendant was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment on each charge, the terms to be cumulative.
