AUSTRALIA AND FAR EAST.
POSSIBILITIES OF CLASH. LONDON, Jan. 9. The Church Times, commenting on Australia’s position in ielation to the Far East, agrees that Australia can no more • escape from the relationship than Britain can escape from Europe. “It has to l>e recognised,” it declares, “that the immediate interests of Britain are not often the immediate interests of the Dominions. Australia is primarily concerned with the Pacific, where her interests and those of the United States are the same.
“Australia is sparsely populated. She could find room for a vast number of European immigrants. Such immigration would be an obvious source of strength, for sooner or later the pressure of over-population will compel the Japanese to attempt to colonise at least the northern parts of the island continent, where Europeans find it difficult to live. That may he the beginning of a. great colour clash, which is without question one of the possibilities of the future.”
