INSECURE TRAILERS.
TOWING ON. HIGHWAYS. TWO PROSECUTIONS. Two prosecutions involving the use of trailers were brought before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday by inspectors ior the Main Highways Board. CLaus Harold Mai, of Rongotea, was fine-d £l, with 12s costs, for failure to possess a warrant of fitness for a trailer. Inspector Hartigan stated that both wheels of the trailer had been wobbling. They were loose on the axle, and a good bump would have brought one of them off. The trailer was really a menace on the road. A similar penalty was imposed on Frederick Steer, farmhand, of Kairanga, for having a trailer not safely and secnrely attached to a tractor. Inspector Coddington stated that when it struck a bump on the road the trailer Ijecame detached and careered across the road to finish up against a fence on the opposite side. There had been a good deal of traffic, but fortunately the road was clear at that time. An examination of the coupling showed that the trailer was fastened only with a U bolt qiul short pin. Appearing for defendant. Mr J. A. Grant stated that when the traffic inspector halted the driver, the sudden jolt unfastened the trailer. The driver usually used a bolt with a split pin, but had been unable to locate it that day.
