THE EMPIRE EXHIBITION.

Of the many industrial enterprises displayed from time to time in the Mother Country, few, if any, have created more interest than the great Empire Exhibition at Bellahouston, Glasgow, which will very shortly open its gates. It is comparable even with the monster display that was staged at Wembley fifteen years ago, and is of special interest to New Zealand in that this Dominion has completed plans for the erection of a court with considerable space for the displaying of the country’s produce and portraying its historical progress and scenic attractions. Furthermore, much may be learned from the Empire Exhibition that will be of value in guiding those responsible for the Centennial Exhibition to be held in Wellington two years hence. The action of the Government in completing the plans for a display at the big attraction in Glasgow is to be commended ; apart from the valuable contacts to be made with visitors from all over the world, there is the added stimulus likely to be given in Ike interest taken by Scottish people in New Zealand’s exports. In the past few years a considerable trade has been built up with the West of Scotland through direct shipping of New Zealand produce to the Clyde, and the Dominion’s display should help to foster that trade. Scottish newspapers indicate that the organisation of the Empire Exhibition is on an elaborate scale and, with much experience of staging highly successful industrial displays in the past, Glasgow is likely to attain a new high standard. With the decision of the French Government to reopen the Paris Exhibition this year, despite considerable difficulties _ encountered some months ago owing to labour friction and other causes, it was felt in some quarters that the Scottish event would suffer, but there are evidences that the reverse will actually be the case. “Let Glasgow Flourish,” a motto revered by every Clydesider, is a most apt slogan for the present year.
