MURDER OF POLICEMAN.
ALLEGED TORTURE
SECRET INQUIRY;
LONDON, Jan. 25,
Rev. R. W. Sorenson, M.P., will raise in the House of Commons the question of the secret inquiry which is being conducted at Lahore into the acquittal by the High Court of a nightwatchman, named Iviroo, for the murder of a policeman, who allegedly tortured- him for six hours in order to extort a confession. The torture occurred under the eyes of children in the married men’s quarters at the barracks. A pipe-major of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders protested to his superior officers. Kiroo seized the weapon with which he was being beaten and killed his tormentor. Kiroo was sentenced to life transportation, hut was later acquitted. The Chief Justice (Sir Douglas Young) declared that Kiroo was justified, adding that lie was satisfied that torture, which was a disgrace to the police, was practised.
