BAY OF PLENTY SEAT
THREE CANDIDATES SO FAR. THE NATIONAL SELECTION. Per Press Association. GISBORNE, Jan. JO. At a meeting of the Bay of Plenty executive of the National Party held at Gisborne on Saturday evening, Mr William Sullivan (Mayor of Whakata.no) was selected as the official National candidate at the coining election. There were fivo nominees who were expected to address the meeting in succession. Prior to the official meeting, however, the nominees conferred among themselves and four decided to withdraw, leaving Mr Sullivan the sole nominee. The other nominees promised him their support. Mr Sullivan’s nomination was thereupon officially confirmed by the executive. Mr Sullivan has been Mayor of Whakata.no for the past 12 years and occupies prominent positions on other local bodies. He is a building contractor and timber merchant and is 48 years old. Meetihgs of the combined executive of the Labour representation committee held at To K.nrnkn to-day to select a labour candidate for tho Bay of Plenty seat chose Mr A. G. Hultiquist, the sitting member, his being the only nomination. There will be at least three candidates for Bay of Plenty, Messrs Sullivan (Nationalist), Hultiqnist (Labour) and G. T. Merry, of Opotild, who announced himself some time ago ,as a Liberal Nationalist. Mr Merry was the unsuccessful National candidate at the last election.
