SUPREME COURT

QUARTERLY SESSION OPENS. A LIGHT LIST. The quarterly session of the Supreme Court, which is expected tooccupy about a fortnight, opened'at .Palmerston North to-clay, His Honour, Mr Justicie Reed, presiding. Tlje Grand Jury were empanelled as follow Messrs A. E. Mansford (foreman), N. H. Bailey R. H. Billens, 1< • W. Coombs, F. A. Cousins, B. G. Cox, H. L. Cunninghame. W. H. Dawick, S A. Goldingliam, T. P. Hart. A. Hopwood, L. M. Justice, C. It. Luke. 1 . M. Moran, H. N. Nairn, C. Neilseu, J.. Selwyn and E. D. Wycherley. His Honour, in his charge to the Grand Jury, stated that there were three bills of indictment to be presented for their consideration, one being a charge of alleged assault with intent to commit a criminal offence, and the other two involving alleged dishonesty. The first case was a sordid, story, and there appeared to have been a considerable amount of liquor consumed at a party. The whole circumstances of the case were unsatisfactory, but it was clear that there was an assault of some sort. Continuing, His Honour said the second case involved a man who had been receiving a salary of £7OO a year, and if what was contained in the_ depositions was correct, lie had obtained money from people by representing that he was investing it for them, but had allegedly appropriated it to his own use. It was clear that a true bill could be found. His Honour commented that the third case, against a 21-year-okl youth named Butler, was not a satisfactory one. The youth denied receiving the cheque with the theft of which he was charged. No receipt was taken for it, it was drawn as an open cheque, and was cashed the same day, but not by him, though two persons would swear that lie had received it. True bills wen. leturned in the case of Godfrey Halse, on seven charges of theft; on all three counts against Daniel Andrew de Vantier, charged with assault with attempt to commit a serious offence, with indecent assault, and with assault; and against Alfred Dell Reuben Butler, charged wii.ii theft.
